Scope and method

What this guide covers

Scotland has a small, well-defined set of licensed casinos, and four of them are covered here: two in Edinburgh, one on the Clyde in Glasgow and one in central Aberdeen. Each is described in the same four parts, so the differences show up without any need for adjectives. Where an operator publishes a figure or an outlet name, it appears; where a detail comes from a third party and could not be confirmed, that is stated rather than smoothed over.

Timing matters more in Scotland than the door times suggest. Machines and bars generally start hours before the live tables do, and each venue sets its own point in the afternoon when dealers come on. Dining The Late Bar opens at noon and runs until half an hour before closing, pouring cocktails, draught beer, gin, wine and spirits. A restaurant serves full meals including pizza and burgers, a light-bites menu is available on the gaming floor, and a sports lounge has a large HD screen.

Atmosphere Part of a busy entertainment complex, so much of the noise outside belongs to the cinema and the bars rather than the casino. Inside it is compact and unfussy, and it keeps going long after Fountainbridge has emptied.

Atmosphere Granite streets outside, a compact and steady room inside. Aberdeen’s late trade is close at hand, but the casino keeps its own pace, filling through the evening and staying busy well past the point most of the city has stopped.

Where they differ

The differences that actually matter

Poker is the clearest divide. Alea runs a dedicated lounge with daily cash games and tournaments and advertises the highest table limits in Scotland; Fountain Park deals cash poker and mahjong alongside its roulette and baccarat; the Maybury venue and Aberdeen both keep dedicated poker rooms of their own. If a specific game is the reason for the trip, that is the line to check first.
